MONTELLIER SPEARED INTO SUBMMISSION
Lundi 03 Janvier 2011
Montpellier started the New Year in Paris with a game against 2nd placed Racing Metro, never an easy away trip but Montpellier had high hopes of pulling something out of the bag even if it was only a defensive bonus point.
Between injuries and the usual gastro which seems to be around all of us at this time of year Montpellier fielded probably the best side possible in the circumstances, but it will be good to see the coaches picking a team from a fully fit squad which at the moment is not the case.
The match started with Racing coming out of the blocks very aggressively and not giving Montpellier much space to manoeuvre, penalties were shared and the game was slightly to the advantage of the home side. The turning point of the game was an outrageous spear tackle on Bustos- Moyano which was signalled by the referee, but an infringement by Julien Tomas trying to regain the ball with his boot gave the referee a moment of memory loss, firstly he reversed the penalty to Racing and then totally forgot the yellow card to the sheepish Wisniewski who was almost already walking to the bin, this maybe acceptable in junior rugby but in the professional game absolutely never, if it was possible to cite the referee this was maybe the day to do it!! Minutes later a badly timed tackle by Gorgodze and yes no memory loss this time straight in the bin, maybe it was easy to understand why Montpellier’s touch line coaches were incensed by the refs decision, Taking the best player of the park for 10 mins did not help the cause and Racing with the extra man scored 2 tries in quick succession, firstly by Vulivuli, then a second by Bergamasco in the corner, both tries converted by Wisniewski, Racing leaving the park at half time 20-3 to the good.
The second half was much better for Montpellier, although Trin-Duc did not return to the continue, his recovery from injury still not 100%, Gorgodze returned to the field after his sin binning and Montpellier tried to create, but the Racing defence was awaiting almost everything that the visitors could throw at them, from a Montpellier attack they stole the ball at the break down and Fillol kicked ahead for the on running Bobo, who had the ball fall into his arms and an unchallenged run to the line, 28-6, attacking bonus point for the Parisians.
Gorgodze did manage to relieve the home side of their bonus point with a try after the forwards had pummelled the line for a good 5 minutes, this was duly converted by Fernandez who did add another penalty in the last minute, final score Racing 28 Montpellier 16.
Next Saturday Montpellier have the visit of the Catalans from Perpignan, another very tough game and the second half of the season is probably going to be much harder than the first half, many of the teams are now aware of our capabilities and they are organising their defences to combat Montpellier’s attacking skills it is now the time for the coaches to confuse the opposition with a few more new tricks which they have been keeping on ice.
Montpellier v Perpignan k.o 14.30 Saturday 8th January Stade Yves du Manoir.
