It is so easy to predict, Bourgoin bottom of the TOP 14, lost every match so far in this seasons Amlin Challenge Cup, financially in dire straits, a President of only a week, so Montpellier to travel to Bourgoin and win with the attacking bonus point seemed just a formality, or so everyone thought! WRONG!!
Beware of the injured beast, and that is exactly the situation that was not considered. Bourgoin came out in front of a crowd who had been invited by their new President fighting for their very existence, on a freezing night and nothing to loose.
The first half was a fairly equal affair apart from a Bourgoin try by winger Coux, both kickers then exchanged penalties with Lagarde the Montpellier no.10 slotting five kicks, the half time score Bourgoin 10 Montpellier 15.
The second half produced an extradinary collapse from the visitors, was it the cold, the lack of match practice, who knows, but they just seemed to be sliding backwards on ice with no forward motion.
Tries from Jooste, Forest, and finally Tulou, getting in on the act for that all important bonus point, giving the home side Bourgoin the maximum 5 points, and the satisfaction of their first victory in this seasons Amlin Challenge Cup.
This defeat is not disastrous for Montpellier but now the next 2 games have to result in victory, or the qualification will just disappear into the many snow drifts that are around the country at this moment in time. Exeter is away to Newcastle on Sunday and if they win, they will top Pool 3 not exactly how Montpellier had envisaged their European campaign this season.
The other main concern, a certain Biarritz coming to town on Wednesday 29th December KO. 18.45, which is the start of the return fixtures in the TOP 14, a great team full of talent,  they will not be coming to Montpellier to make up the numbers, and they will not be bring any late Christmas presents. We are second in the table; we need to stay in that position,
The Gentle Giant and the General (Bechu Galthie) will be laying down the law over the festive period and it would be of no surprise, if Christmas is cancelled until further notice for the players!!!
